Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department's own video of a Monroe Avenue house fire Saturday night shows thick black smoke and flame at a second-story window, a firefighter walking up the driveway toward the burning home. "Saturday night - Monroe Ave," the department captioned it, crediting all three of its companies — Protection Fire Company 1, Community Engine Co. 2, and Sicomac Engine Co. 3 — along with mutual aid coordinated as Northwest Bergen Mutual Aid and Bergen County Battalion 4.[1]

The department's post doesn't name Waldwick specifically or say whether anyone was hurt. News 12 New Jersey, reporting separately, said Waldwick firefighters assisted and that no injuries were reported; that account didn't give a street or a cause.[2]

Three Township Committee members happened to be at the scene. "Saturday night, along with the mayor and with May, I was at the scene of a pretty intense fire right around the corner here on Monroe Ave," Committeeman Rudy Boonstra told the committee at its September 1 meeting.[3]

Committeewoman Mae Bogdansky, who was helping an EMT hand out water to firefighters, said the department "worked seamlessly during this fire" as crews rotated through the heat. "Young, old, they were in the house," she said. "But they all really worked seamlessly during this fire." She estimated the fire was contained within roughly a half hour to an hour, and said there were no injuries.[4]

"Witnessing them up on a roof with heavy smoke with the other half of the roof completely engulfed," Mayor Roger J. Lane said, "was just an incredible level of heroism," adding that he was thankful no one — including anyone inside the home — was hurt.[5]
