New Principal Named, Longtime Teacher Retires as Wyckoff BOE Election Filing Begins
The Wyckoff Board of Education named a new Coolidge principal and marked a longtime math teacher's retirement at its June 29 meeting, as filing opened for three seats in the Nov. 3 school election, with nominating petitions due July 27.
The Wyckoff Board of Education met June 29 for the last time before its summer recess, taking up a wide slate of business: a new elementary school principal, a longtime teacher's retirement, a security camera contract, and the opening of candidate filing for the November school board election.
Three seats on the board will be on the ballot in the Tuesday, Nov. 3 Annual School Election — two carrying three-year terms and one a one-year term, Business Administrator and Board Secretary Patricia Salvati announced in a district notice.[2] Residents interested in running must file nominating petitions with the Bergen County Clerk's office by 4 p.m. July 27.[1] Petitions now require 25 signatures under a 2025 state law.[3] The New Jersey School Boards Association offers a candidate kit covering nominating petitions, the legal qualifications for candidacy, and the role of a school board member.[2][3] The board's next meeting is Aug. 17 — moved up from Aug. 10 — followed by Sept. 14, per the agenda's official calendar; it will not meet again in July.
In personnel matters, the board approved the appointment of Jessica Torre as principal of Calvin Coolidge Elementary School, effective Aug. 31.[4][5] The personnel committee said the position had drawn a large number of applicants. Torre holds a bachelor's degree in English from Fordham University and a master's in English from New York University.
The meeting also marked the retirement of Grade 7 mathematics teacher Laura Giumarra from Eisenhower Middle School, effective June 30, after a Wyckoff career that began at Sicomac School.[6][7] Giumarra attended the June 29 meeting, where Superintendent Dr. Kerry Postma offered well-wishes, crediting her with "26 years of service to students and families in Wyckoff." "We wish her well in the days ahead," Postma said.[8] The board's written retirement resolution puts her tenure at 23 years;[7] Wyckoff News was unable to resolve the discrepancy between the spoken and written record before publication.
In other business, the board approved a contract with SHI International for Genetec security cameras, including installation and hardware, for Coolidge, Lincoln and Sicomac schools, totaling $97,851 under a state contract.[9][10] The purchase was among the consent-agenda items advanced by the finance committee.
Rounding out the meeting, Superintendent Postma reported that district enrollment as of June 23 stood at 2,050 students, a net change of zero from the previous report.[11] Kindergarten enrollment for the fall is currently 173, compared with 203 enrolled in the current school year.
